The Prehospital Trauma Life Support Course

PHTLS

Developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is recognized around the world as the leading continuing education program for pre-hospital emergency trauma care. The PHTLS courses objective is to promote excellence in trauma patient management by all providers involved in the delivery of pre-hospital care through education. 

The two day, 16 hour course’s objective is to improve the quality of trauma care and decrease mortality.  The PHTLS course focuses on how to identify, manage, and transport trauma patients in the pre-hospital environment while using the highest level of care and giving the patient the greatest chance of survival.  PHTLS courses are continuously updated to keep up with advances in the field, ATLS Guidelines, and feedback from PHTLS participants.

Students will learn to do the following skills throughout the PHTLS course:

  • Identify the mechanism of injury
  • Recognize life-threatening injuries
  • Relate pathophysiology to injuries
  • Assess and manage trauma patients
  • Perform appropriate interventions

Throughout the course, there will be skill stations to make sure you understand the practices by completing them and not just reading about them.

  • Airway Management & Ventilation
  • Assessment & Management
  • Rapid Extrication
  • Spinal Immobilization
  • Pediatric Assessment
  • Pediatric Immobilization

Evaluation Scenarios If youou have already completed the PHTLS course within the last four years, but want a refresher, some programs will offer an 8 hour refresher course.
