How to Get ACLS Recertification
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification is current for two years. Because the guidelines update on a regular basis, ACLS-Certified individuals need to get recertified every two years in order to stay current.
Your hospital or medical facility may also require that you stay current with your ACLS Certification.
The ACLS Certification is an advanced certification in cardiac emergency care. People who are certified in ACLS are qualified to manage sudden respiratory arrest, VF/VT arrest, acute stroke, asystole, bradycardias, and pulseless electrical activity. They are also qualified to manage stable and unstable tachycardias.
In addition to basic life support techniques like CPR and AED, the ACLS-Certified individual is trained to administer life-saving medications during a cardiorespiratory emergency. Being certified in ACLS provides the advanced knowledge needed to care for patients who may be suffering a cardiac arrest, choking emergency, or acute stroke.
Recertification courses
Recertification for Advanced Cardiac Life Support requires enrolling in a recertification course approved by the American Heart Association. In the recertification course, participants learn the latest science in ACLS care. Their techniques will be up-to-date and in accordance with the American Heart Association’s guidelines.
The course prepares you to take the recertification exam for ACLS Certification.
When you study for the recertification exam, make sure to review the latest guidelines for administering medications and memorize the algorithms for asystole, PEA, V-Fib, V-Tach, bradycardia, and tachycardia. Understanding and reading ECGs is still an important part of the recertification exam.
Your experience and previous knowledge will also be useful when you recertify for ACLS. Add the updated guidelines to your repertoire, and you should be able to pass the recertification exam.
Staying up-to-date
Recertifying for ACLS keeps your certification up-to-date. You will have the latest knowledge in managing cardiorespiratory emergencies and be prepared to treat patients in various scenarios.
