Firefighter Written Exam

When preparing to take the exam to become a Firefighter, you want to make sure you are prepared in all areas, and the written exam is no exception. The following will break down the written part of the Firefighter exam in order to help you prepare.

Sections Of The Firefighter Written Exam

  • Part 1: Reading Comprehension. You will be asked to read several selections and answer questions that pertain to the samples.
  • Part 2: Verbal Expression. This section of the exam will test your grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Part 3: Observation and Memory. You will be asked to look at a series of maps, passages, and diagrams for a specified amount of time. After the time is up, you will be asked questions regarding what you looked at. The questions will have to be answered from memory as you are not allowed to go back and look at the series again.
  • Part 4: Spatial Orientation. You will be tested on your ability to navigate using floor plans, maps, and illustrations.
  • Part 5: Reasoning and Judgment. In this section, you will be given a series of scenarios. You will have to determine the best solution for these scenarios based on judgment and logical thinking.
  • Part 6: Mathematics. The questions in this section contain high school math such as geometry and algebra.
  • Part 7: Mechanical Aptitude. Here, you will be asked questions regarding simple machines and tools that you would use in the field.

There are courses you can take to prepare for the Firefighter written exam, as well as books you can purchase to help you study. It is suggested that you prepare in some way so you are not caught off guard when you see the exam. You can even take some practice exams online. Good luck!
