BSN Career Outlook

BSN Career Outlook

A bachelors of science in nursing (BSN) is a degree that will help train you for a career as a registered nurse.  There are several different ways one can go about completing their BSN.  Some students decide to go for their associates degree in nursing and gain some work experience.  Others may decide to do all four years at once and graduate with their BSN.

Regardless of which path you take, we all have the same question, what is the career outlook for someone with a BSN?

BLS Stats for BSN Career

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for registered nurses is expected to increase by 19% between 2012 and 2022.  Those with a BSN have a higher chance of being hired by a company. In fact, a registered nurse with a BSN is qualified for more than 80% of jobs that are nursing related!

BSN Salaries

Salaries for registered nurses with a BSN can vary depending on location, experience, certification, and specialty.  On average, someone with a BSN with less than a year of experience, may earn around $52,000 annually.   After 1-4 years of experience, you may have the chance to earn up to $62,000 a year.  As stated before, this can all vary based on geographic location and experience.  For instance, in Atlanta Georgia, an incoming professional with a BSN may earn $59,000 a year when in New York City, that same person may earn close to $70,000 annually.

Nursing is a field that will never be short of jobs.  With technology and medical care advancements, there will always be a need for nurses.  Another great thing about this field is that there are so many specialties, that one is bound to spark your interest.  Whether you want to work in the ICU, pediatrics, or public health, there will be employers looking for potential employees who earned their BSN and want to grow within the medical field.
