3 Must-Have Certifications for EMTs

EMTs are often first on the scene in life-or-death situations and emergencies. Their advanced healthcare training can make the difference between losing or saving a life. Their ability to think on their feet is essential to effectively do their jobs.

A combination of comprehensive education and a consistent drive to pursue additional training can give EMTs the confidence to take on the daily challenges they face. This is why it’s important for EMTs to actively seek certifications that will ensure they have the right skills and training to properly do the job.

EMT Basic or EMT-B

EMT Basic certification is an entry-level certification that is intended to train students in basic EMT skills. Most programs offer a two-part skills and lab course. For the basic skills program, EMTs are trained to assess patient needs and provide care for common conditions. This is supported by lab training, where students are expected to apply these skills through hands-on and practical scenarios.

EMT-Bs are required to accumulate 110 hours of training. This certification is designed to test their knowledge and skills in offering basic life support functions and their ability to complete non-invasive procedures.

While the program may seem simple, the time and effort required to earn this certification set the baseline for growing your career. Be sure to put the work in at this point in your EMT career to reap the rewards later on.

EMT- Intermediate or EMT-I

After earning your EMT-B certification, pursue EMT-Intermediate.

This program is designed to ensure that students have the skills and proficiency to conduct more complicated procedures. In most cases, you need to complete EMT-B before earning your EMT-I certification.

To earn EMT-I certification, 200–400 hours of training must be accumulated. This certification teaches EMTs to insert IVs, intubate patients, and depending on the state, administer drugs.

EMT- Paramedic Certifications

Completing this program requires earning your EMT-Basic and EMT-Intermediate certifications, and complete two years of practical training. These stringent requirements are because the EMT-Paramedic course is the highest EMT certification and the training involves more advanced applications of medicine such as cardiology, a deeper understanding of anatomy, and a comprehensive grasp of pharmacology.

Most EMTs who pursue advanced certifications like this have completed hospital internships or practical field experience in an ambulance. Take note that paramedics have a wide range of job duties that include basic EMT work as well as more advanced tasks such as EKGs, manual defibrillation, and X-rays.

The importance of pursuing these certifications in your EMT career cannot be overstated. The combination of practical experience and training, as well as classroom education, work together to provide the necessary tools to be effective in your role.

Continuing Education Is Required for EMTs

Medicine and healthcare is a constantly evolving field that requires EMTs and paramedics to stay on top of new trends and techniques. Potential employers will likely require additional training to ensure that you are confident and capable in the job.

Gain More Confidence In The Field

An EMT career can often be stressful. Day in and day out, EMTs face intense, high-pressure scenarios. Having the confidence to face these daily challenges can help minimize the pressure of the job. The best way to do this is by making sure you have the necessary training and experience. Taking advanced courses and earning top certifications will boost your skills and ensure you have what it takes to do the job and handle the physical, emotional, and mental pressures of being an EMT.

Build Credibility and Authority

Earning additional certifications shows potential employers that you are serious about your EMT career and taking active steps to stay on top of your game. In the job market, advanced certifications will place you ahead of candidates who have not earned them. It also gives you better leverage to secure higher pay and opens up more opportunities for career advancement.
