Florida Paramedic Recertification
To become a paramedic in the state of Florida, a number of steps are required before you’re able to jump on board with an EMS team.
After completing your education, the state exam ensures you are fully prepared to take on the rigors and demands of the work. Within two years of program completion, paramedic candidates must take and pass the board test.
The most common option for this test is the NREMT, or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. In the state of Florida, you have an additional option for initial certification, as well. The second option is to apply to the Department of Health for an Authorization to Test for the Florida Examination. Whichever route you choose, it’s important to note that this is not the end of your certification requirements to continue serving as a paramedic.
Why Recertify as a Paramedic?
As with many other professions on the health spectrum, staying up-to-date as a paramedic is crucial to an efficient, safe performance on the job. Studies and research emerge often detailing new findings that can alter the way an EMS team operates or how EMTs and paramedics should treat certain patients or emergency scenarios. Continuing to stay informed and practicing less-used skills often can be the difference between saving and losing a life on the job. When emergency situations are the job’s typical demand, one can never be too prepared or too equipped with the tools needed to respond appropriately.
How to Recertify as a Florida Paramedic
Within 60 days of your certificate’s expiration, a notice will be sent to you detailing your options for renewing or upgrading your certification. In some situations this may be a more detailed process, but for most paramedics, the recertification process may be completed online.
According to the state Department of Health, to recertify, you will need to submit:
1. A completed application, obtained from the DOH
2. Applicable fees, obtained from the DOH
3. Proof of 30 hours of a refresher course, including 2 hours in pediatric emergencies
